Intro to Turning

In AWT’s Intro to Manual Turning, you’ll learn manual lathe safety, setup, tool geometry, and the fundamentals of facing, turning, drilling, boring, and basic threading over six evening sessions. The course runs in Mentor, OH at our Transformation Training Center and is designed to help you earn more by adding in-demand manual machining skills. Tuition is $1,100. 

What You Will Learn

  • Lathe safety and machine anatomy (carriage, cross slide, compound)
  • Workholding, chucking, centers, part runout, and dial indicator checks
  • Tool selection & geometry (HSS vs. carbide) basics
  • Feeds/speeds for turning, facing, drilling, and parting
  • Basic threading with a quick-change gearbox; surface finish & tolerances
  • Basic turning, boring, facing, and drilling operations

  • 6 sessions, 3 hours each (evenings; Wednesday series) 
  • Dates: November 5 through December 17, 2025, 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM
  • Location: AWT Transformation Training Center, Mentor, OH
  • Tuition: $1,100
